With the Master's War being some thirty years ago or so, a lot of the upper echelon (of which Rainard, Sardar, Deryn, and Aldebrand were a part of, to name a few) are pretty old. The latter three are of longer-lived races, so their age doesn't quite show. Rainard...? Well, who knows what species he is, heh. Point is, with how long ago the war was, there are very few of them (other than the undead like the Master) who are quite as spry as they used to be. And Bozhena? Who's human, according to Rainard? She must be really ancient.

Little snow up the mountain but more going down? I take it avalanches are a safe bet?

Heh, possibly. Although, I did kinda envision it more like the passes going up are more shielded from the elements by way of terrain or something. Like, clouds and the sort might move in from one direction, but the geography of the area might block of the winds from going a certain way, making it so one area might not get a whole lot of snow.

Honestly speaking though, I'm not entirely sure if this is actually possible, realistically speaking. I did ask around, and some folks have said that it's possible for one area up a mountain to be warmer than an area below it because of some complicated stuff with how the wind and the weather is affected by the terrain, but I'm not going to lie, I don't quite understand how it all works, heh.

As soon as you said “shielded”, I thought of something my dad told me about:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_shadow

However, that would imply all the passes are on the windward side (but I don’t know if that’s what you wanted).

A temperature inversion seems to be what you were told about:
