It's been mentioned before in the intermission, but in terms of attaining degrees, where high journeyman is like getting your bachelor's. Another way of looking at those magic rankings, is that being a high journeyman is like getting your black belt. At that point, you can walk the walk and talk the talk. But you're no master yet. You're certainly competent at that point, but that's just you only really entering the realm of martial artists. Your journey really begins there.

A lot of folks may think of having a black belt as some amazing feat, where at that point you can kick names and take asses as you please. In actuality though, that's the point where you can be said to have completed your training in the fundamentals. That's when you can actually get started on the other stuff. There are other ranks beyond black belt, so while it's certainly something to be proud of, it's not exactly star quality.

It's the same with magic. Once you get to high journeyman, you're a competent and capable magic user. You can be trusted to be familiar with most things your magical field can throw at you. But you're nothing to write home about, usually. You've gotten your professional driver's license, but you're no Grand Prix racer. You can cook a moist and juicy turkey, but you're not working at a Michelin-starred restaurant. You can DIY a closet from scratch, but you're not designing a suspension bridge. And so on.

(I noticed what you did here (in the comment) and I can assure you that I'm a fan of such things that may or may not go unnoticed or be ignored. Just saying :) )

Check out other great comics!
